A puppy or kitten's first visit
Most of the pets on our board were between seven and ten weeks old at their first visit: about when they come home. Here's what happens, and a board for yours.
Write your pet's board
Fill it in, then send it to us to book their first visit. We'll chalk the real one when you come in.
What happens at the first visit
The weigh-in
On the scale first. It's how every dose is worked out, and the number that goes on the board.
Nose to tail
Eyes, ears, teeth, heart, lungs, tummy, skin and coat, and a look at anything you're worried about.
The first vaccination
Quick, and usually over before they notice. We'll give you the dates for the rest of the course.
Worms, ticks and fleas
The right product for their weight, and a schedule that keeps up as they grow.
Your questions
Food, house-training, chewing, when to sterilise, and a microchip. Bring a list: everyone forgets something.
The chalkboard
Name, age, weight, what they love and who their favourite human is. Then the photo.
The vaccination course
Puppies and kittens need a short course of injections before they're protected, so keep them away from unknown dogs and public grass until it's done. A typical course looks like this; Dr Chris will set your pet's exact dates.
- 6 to 8 weeksThe first vaccination, and deworming
- 9 to 10 weeksThe second
- 12 weeksThe third, with rabies, which the law requires
- 1 yearBoosters, then a yearly check-up
What to bring
- Any papers from the breeder or shelter: vaccinations and deworming so far.
- A stool sample, if you can manage it.
- Kittens in a carrier; puppies on a lead or in your arms.
- Their favourite treats. The scale is less scary with a reward.
- Your questions, written down.
Every first visit goes on the board
New puppies and kittens are weighed, checked over and photographed with the chalkboard: se 1ste veeartsbesoek, their first vet visit. These are some of the latest.
